As a goal in power quality improvement solution we can say:

 

"Prevention is very very better and simpler and economical  than treatment "

 

 for example if we can use an inverter that its harmonics is acceptable , this way is economical and simpler than we use passive filters for harmonic mitigation and reduction.

We can classify PQ improvement solutions in three category:

1- without budget

like: changing position of capacitor banks , not starting big loads in same time , power network single line changing , …

 

this solutions need to having a good knowledge  and experience of power and conditions of load manner.

 

2- low budget

        like changing inverters and  control equipments, nonlinear loads reducing , …

 

3- high budget

like: passive filter installing , using active filters and active conditioners and stabilizers , ..

WHEN IS CONSULTING NECESSARY?
Consulting is typically necessary when your operations are being affected by: Equipment Shutdown, Hardware Failure, Software Programming Contamination, Programming Errors, Noise Interference, Control Problems, Component failure, Transformer and Conductor Overheating, Opening of Breakers/Blown Fuses, Power Supply Failures, Capacitor Bank Damage, Current in Grounding Conductors, Lightning Damage, Personal Shock.


OUR CONSULTING SERVICES INCLUDE:

  • Review of source problems to discuss problem symptoms, effect on operations, period of problem, time problem occurs.
  • Review of electrical plans to verify electrical mains, sub-mains and panels in accordance with site drawings.
  • Equipment specifications verification to determine susceptibility and performance levels of equipment or loads being affected.
  • Facilities visual inspection to observe any conditions requiring improvements.
  • Measurements of voltage, current levels, power factor, harmonic distortion, voltage fluctuations, transients, etc.
  • Earth ground testing to verify quality of grounding system.
  • Electric service continuity testing to verify proper return path ground fault protection.
  • Utility AC line inspection to observe current level of service and determine economical methods of improving overall site power.
  • Inspect site lightning and surge suppression equipment for proper installation and grounding to ensure that lightning currents are dissipated into earth grounding system.

With the ever-increasing use of sophisticated controls and equipment in industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental facilities, the continuity, reliability, and quality of electrical service has become extremely crucial to many power users. Electrical systems are subject to a wide variety of power quality problems which can interrupt production processes, affect sensitive equipment, and cause downtime, scrap, and capacity losses. The most common power quality problems are:

Voltage Sags

Voltage Sags

Voltage sags are the most common power problem encountered. Sags are a short-term reduction in voltage, and can cause interruptions to sensitive equipment such as adjustable-speed drives, relays, and robots. Sags are most often caused by fuse or breaker operation, motor starting, or capacitor switching. Voltage sags typically are non-repetitive, or repeat only a few times due to recloser operation. Sags can occur on multiple phases or on a single phase and can be accompanied by voltage swells on other phases.

Power interruptions are zero-voltage events that can be caused by weather, equipment malfunction, recloser operations, or transmission outages. Interruptions can occur on one or more phases and are typically short duration events, the vast majority of power interruptions are less than 60 seconds.

Voltage Flicker

Voltage flicker is rapidly occurring voltage sags caused by sudden and large increases in load current. Voltage flicker is most commonly caused by rapidly varying loads that require a large amount of reactive power such as welders, rock-crushers, sawmills, wood chippers, metal shredders, and amusement rides. It can cause visible flicker in lights and cause other processes to shut down or malfunction.
